Mathletics LIVE - Te Kauru Nui Maths Hub

Every Thursday and Friday the students in Te Kauru Nui Numeracy Hub warm up their maths brains using 'Live Mathletics'. 3… 2… 1… RACE! The fast-paced and exciting world of LIVE Mathletics is where students can challenge each other to a real-time race that tests the speed and accuracy of their maths skills. For the first 15 mins of the maths sessions, our classroom is absolutely buzzing with maths enthusiasm and excitement!

Term 3 - STEAM Kits - Electronics with Arduino Boards

This term the students have been continuing their STEAM learning using the STEAM Electronics kits. They have been learning how to block code using the program Snap4Arduino. The purpose of this learning has been for the students to control one or more LED lights on an electronic arduino board using code. They have learnt to turn the LED on, make it flicker, alternate the current and slowly dim the LED. Each week the coding expectation has increased, which has been very tricky and the students have shown perseverance in achieving successful outcomes!

Te Kauru goes Ice Skating

On Thursday, Te Kauru students enjoyed the opportunity to go Ice Skating in Kaitaia.  This was a fundraiser for Kaingaroa School's end of year camp.

The students thoroughly enjoyed this experience. Thanks Kaingaroa School for providing this opportunity and the Board of Trustees for allowing us to attend.

Term 3 Assembly - Akomanga

This term we have been learning te reo with Whaea Lisa focusing on akomanga (classroom). The students learned the kupu of most the items in our akomanga. They used this knowledge to create simple sentence structures - questions and answers.

Maths Fun and Games

Each Friday we have a range of maths games that our students play, and each week they are new activities.  This week the students enjoyed playing live mathletics, QR basic facts, I have who has times tables and of course the attraction of the day, the sphero. Here are some photos and videos of our maths learning today.

The girls are working on their coding to control the Sphero.  They had to consider the speed of the sphero, how long it would roll for, the direction it would go, while some included sounds and a change of lights.

The boys are wondering around the room looking for the card that has the answer to their questions.  Once the find the correct card, they scan the QR code to reveal their next question/challenge.

Sorry, thought this video was a little longer, but these boys are playing times tables "Who has, I have".  A fun and engaging way to practice basic facts.

Food for Thought with Desley Austen

The Food Pyramid

Over the next couple of weeks, Te Kauru students will be learning about food nutrition to ensure a healthy heart.

This week the students learnt about the food pyramid and which foods we should eat most of, and which foods are occasional foods. The students enjoyed the first session. Thank you Desley.

2018 Term 2 - Sir Peter Blake Assembly - Leadership Week (05.07.18)

The last week of term was Leadership Week. As part of Leadership Week, classrooms all around NZ have been learning about an iconic NZ leader called Sir Peter Blake.



Sir Peter Blake was an exceptional sailor, leader and team person. His achievements included winning two America’s Cup trophies and numerous line honours in world-famous sailing races including five Whitbred Round the World Races. One of Sir Peter Blake’s sayings was, “If it isn’t hard, it isn’t worth doing. He liked a challenge. That attitude enabled him to take on many new adventures. He sailed to Antartica and then onto South America in order to uncover environmental issues and to show the rest of the world what was happening around us.

He wanted to make the world aware of the pollution that was happening in the oceans. He was a popular New Zealand leader who was hard working, a team player. Sir Peter Blake believed in the incredible potential of young kiwis to achieve great things. He knew that inspiring leaders of any age could be found in every corner of New Zealand.

Our Sir Peter Blake Leadership Assembly was run by Khalia, Tai, Jayden, Rachele, Phillip, Stevie, Chilli, Nate, Dominic, Corbyn and Tawa who spoke so beautifully!

Congratulations to Nate, Chilli, Stevie and Dominic for being recognised as wonderful Year 6 student leaders in and out of class as nominees for the Sir Peter Blake Leadership Award 2018!



A huge congratulations to Lochie for being the 2018 winner of this prestigious award. Lochie is a buddy reader in Te Kakano, helps at breakfast club and can be relied on for any job in and out of class. He is kind, respectful, honest, is self-motivated, a team player and a wonderful role model.



We were so lucky to have Jaymie Hilton- Jones, ex pupil and Deputy Head Boy of Kaitaia College, presenting the award. It was wonderful for our students to listen to such an excellent young leader in our community talking about his goals, aspirations and achievements. His korero was very motivating and a proud moment for all his ex-teachers in the room especially Sir!

We are proud that there are many opportunities for students at Paparore School to show their leadership abilities and we have leaders of all ages throughout our school environment!
